They are sometimes harder to find, though we've found that city and state information centers have a wealth of useful camping information. You mentioned an America the Beautiful Lands pass. We've had to do that for several of the appliances in our motorhome. Camping among those amazing rock formations was really cool! This kind of camping is most often done on Bureau of Land Management or National Forest land. The only exceptions are during certain special events, or if you rent a cabin or are inside of your own motorhome but not necessarily tent. Much of Alaska is only reachable by dirt roads, or in many cases by plane or boat. Small towns were quite popular with us.
